Today is the official release date for I Love You More Than Rainbows, a children's picture book by brand new author Susan E. Crites (blog: SusanCrites.com), with illustrations by Mark and Rosemary Jarman. Up front, I am related to Mrs. Crites. Her husband to be precise. So yes, this spotlight is very personal. Biased some would say. That's fine ... but from the overwhelmingly super-positive response we've received from countless people so far - not just friends and family - this book is making some wonderfully big waves.
I love you more than rainbows and beautiful skies.
I love you more than buttercups and wings of butterflies.
I love you more than ice cream with sprinkles on the top,
Or jumping in the pool with a great big belly flop!
How can you not like a book with 'belly flop' in it?? Using fun rhymes, sweet words, vibrant illustrations, and flowing, easy-to-understand text, I Love You More Than Rainbows sets out to help children understand the words "I Love You" by using things and exciting situations they recognize and can get their minds around.
If you visit Susan's blog, you'll get a better picture of this remarkable, creative and just plain goofy person. Her picture page alone (dogs and silliness dominate) is worth five minutes of your life, and your young kids will feel very at home there. She's a Pied Piper to kids. I can't tell you how often I've been in a room full of people, and over to the side, there's Sue with all the kids. And the kids are wide-eyed and laughing. And so is she. That kind of rare ability to connect with kids on their level comes across in this book as well. The illustrators, Mark and Rosemary Jarman, are out of this world as well. Crazy talented. I'd never seen illustrations like these until Sue received the first proofs. Kids are transfixed and smiling when gazing at them.
There's a remarkable story behind the writing and making of this book, and behind my wife becoming a children's book author. Actually, it's remarkable she's even here. She's overcome immense obstacles and trials in her life. This book is a gift from God. And she's a gift to me and to everyone else she comes in contact with, including the children and adults who choose to experience this very special book, and the very special person behind it.
